WD10SPCX: WDIDLE3 or other tools won't see it

I got the WD10SPCX drive (WD Blue Slim 7mm 5.400rpm 1TB HDD), which I want to use in my ultrabook. Problem is the 8sec spindown / park feature, which for me makes this drive unusable.

I read everywhere about the WDIDLE3 tool, which never sees my drive. I tried it internally with its SATA connector, I tried it externally with a Verbatim USB interface. I also tried the other tools WDSPINUP and WDIdleDisable. None of these see the drive.

I changed my computer’s USB controller to USB2.0, but that didn’t help either.

Is there any way to change the idle behaviour of this drive? Otherwise I just have to return it, which would be sad.

Thanks so much!

SUCCESS!

I tried the eSATA interface of the Verbatim controller (a.k.a. a Verbatim external HDD I ripped apart), and now WDIDLE3 DID see the drive. The idle time was originally even set to 4 seconds! Why would WD do that? I set it to 120 seconds, and so far everything seems fine. Excellent!

Cheers
