WD1002FAEX + FreeNAS SW RAID 1

Hi, I read many threads here about how these are not “oficially” RAID enabled. I have 1TB WD1002FAEX that I bought in January 2011. I haven’t touched the FW and the production date is Dec 2010. I wanted to set up a home file server. I am not a fan of the buzz ZFS and wanted to set up a software RAID 1 with 2 of these drives. However, if I buy 1 more from the egg, the FW will most likely be different.

  • Will I be affected by having different FW? Can/should I update my drive’s FW?

  • Since it’s SW RAID, will there be a problem?

  • Anyone successfully set up FreeNAS with 2 Caviar Blacks?

I want to be sure before I spent $100 on another drive. Based on what I read there shouldn’t be a problem with a software RAID 1… but you guys may know better.

Cheers.

Has long as the two hard drives have the same specifications, the RAID should work. For more information about supported RAID configurations for your hard drive model, follow the link below.
