WD1002FAEX Black 1TB Very Slow and Unstable

Hi everyone!

I need a little help over here. I have a WD Black 1TB on my desktop. A couple of days ago my system just stopped (froze and I had to reboot). Since then, I could not start or even install a new OS on that drive.

I’ve made some tests with HD Tune Pro, and what I got is pretty weird: Looks like a heart beating… Find below

PS. What I have done so far was change SATA cable and slots on motherboard, but it still the same.

Also I have tried to run chkdsk, but it took much much time to complete, and I’ve gave up…

Currently I’m using another hard drive to make more tests (now running Data Life Guard)

Does anyone know what is going on? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Post the data from the health tab here, if the serial is showing black it out.

This is the Health Tab.

The first image is too small for my eyes, but it appears that you’ve shortstroked the drive.

Try repeating the test, but shortstroke the drive to 3GB and 1GB. This will hopefully tell us if the problem is related to one particular head.

Very interesting, thanks for share this link

So… Find below the tests with short stroke 3GB and 1GB. Ps: Both tests did not finish at all for some reason…

I’ve made a third test with 3GB again:

Thanks again!

Clearly your drive has 4 heads. AFAICT the performamce dips are spread randomly over all 4 heads. One possible explanation could be a background Windows task which is interfering with the test. An alternative explanation might be oxidisation of the HDA contacts on the PCB. This is where the PCB mates with the headstack connector on the drive. You can clean these PCB contacts with a soft pencil erasr.

These are the HDA contacts:
