WD +TURBO on a My Book Studio. What does it actually DO?

I have just received my 3TB My Book Studio, and it is recommended that I install the WD +TURBO driver, since that is claimed to improve performance.

Googling shows that users find their mileage varies as far as performance is concerned, but nowhere can I find what this software actually does.

Others have asked this same question in these forums, but I have found no answers.  I have just found a lot of complaints about the replacement icon!

Anyone have any light to shine on this?  I’m thinking if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but maybe it is worth the effort?

I just want to understand what behavior will change, how this driver can improve performance and what trade-offs exist

I don’t know about Macs but am in the if it ain’t broke don’t fix it camp.
