WD Smartware can't find old drives

Hi, I bougt a new Western external harddrive and installed WD Smartware for the first time. It works with my 2 new hard drives but if I connect an older hard drive WD Smartware can’t find it. Why?

WD SmartWare was designed to work only with drives bundled with it, this is because Smartware needs for the drives to contain a compatible Firmware for the features it provides.

Take for example the WD My Book 3.0. Even though it is an external hard drive from the current generation, WD SmartWare does not work with it, hence, SmartWare is not supplied with the drive.
