WD refused to honor 90 day warranty for recertified WD740ADFD purchased at Fry's Electronics

I purchased a recertified hard drive at Fry’s Electronics on October 23, which failed on January 2.  Fry’s directed me to contact WD, who asked for a copy of the receipt which states

       RECERTIFIED HARD DRIVE

       90 DAY WARR…, WD7400ADFD

My response from WD ‘Raul’ was

  Our records show this drive carries a R6 limited six month warranty. Limited warranty drives are not eligible for

  warranty  update. Please see your receipt, it states the limited warranty.

Can someone explain to me how WD can refuse to accept a return on a defective hard drive that was purchased

well within  the 90 warranty period?  Thank you!
