WD Passport External HDD not accessible

HI,
I have a WD My Passport 0730 1 TB, firmware 1012, drive. I cannot access the data on it. It intermittently appears in THIS PC as a peripherial, coming and going irregurlarly. When it is available, it shows all the file folders and if I click one of them, it will let me view the file (mostly photo archives from my work). I cannot access these files to transfer them to a HDD or other device.

I have run the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, here’s what I get:
Upon opening the diagnostics: SMART Status: FAIL
Extended Test: FAIL, 08 - Too many bad sectors detected
SMART drive information: RAW READ ERROR RATE: value:37, threshold:51,worst: 37

I am using a pc with Windows 8. I’ve tried a different computer (XT/Windows 7, Windows 10) as well as different cables, nothing works. The pc detects errors and when I proceed to test/fix the errors in windows, it just runs indefinitely without fixing the problem.

Thanks for your kind help. I’m in desperate need of these files.

Hi,

As a recommendation, try using a data recovery software to see if you can get the data out of the drive.

If the unit still under warranty, I’ll recommend you to contact WD Support to see if there’s anything that they can do for you.
