WD My Cloud 3TB

Model #: WDBCTL0030HWT-EESN

Hi, I think it’s absolutely disgusting that after 10 min of searching I couldn’t find any real Technical Specifications on the above model. Am I supposed to buy the product because of the look of its white plastic casing? Is this what technology has come down to?

I emailed a few online shops and the common reply is that they didn’t get anything more detailed from WD. This is shocking. How am I supposed to compare Seagate Central vs WD?

So now I have to register an account on this Forum to ask the following questions:

  1. What hard-drive model is inside the 2TB, 3TB and 4TB model? By that I want to know if it’s 5400rpm, 7200rpm, how much buffer, etc…

  2. Are they RAID drives (if more than one disk)?

  3. Can I use the USB 3.0 port to transfer data from my existing hard-drives onto the My Cloud? I don’t see myself copying Terabytes of data over Wifi.

Thank you for any information. Goodluck finding it in the first place.

  1.   http://www.wdc.com/global/products/specs/?driveID=1086&language=1

  2.  Single disk, no RAID.

  3.  No, USB only  to add storage, but you can connect MYCloud directly with ethernet to computer for initial transer.

  1. you can connect a usb drive to my cloud and it will appear as a share. You can then copy between shares.

here is a detailed review., It may give you some ideas or clarify something.

You may want to watch this video about the WD My Cloud.

After watching it if you check the list of videos you should see one that compares the Seagate Central to the WD My Cloud.

@ HeRoTech  Thanks but for Rotational Speed (rpm), they write IntelliPower. It’s also in the tech sheet (2879-800002.PDF). None of the models display what RPM they run at, instead, in very small print it says “For each drive model, WD may use a different, invariable RPM.” To me, Western Digital is going into a lot of pain to hide this simple RPM value. Are they doing something bad like giving us low RPM, low value hard-drives in a NAS casing?

They are likely putting 5400-rpm drives. And you do want low RPM drives if you understand how NAS are supposed to work. Putting a 7200 rpm drive will cause your NAS drive to die sooner. It’s not meant to be a high-performance desktop drive. You need to understand that.

@ cat0w  that Youtube reviewer is completely pants. My gaawwdd… I doubt he even knows what RPM or buffer stands for.  Good technology reviewers are all dead.

@CyberNut1 So why aren’t WD honest about this 5400rpm eh? It’s like Sony Vaio. " Buy This Laptop. It has 1TB hard-drive!!! only 5400rpm though, and 8MB cache… so your Windows will take ages to boot and all your software will be both slow to start and take ages to save large files to disk. It will be nightmare to use after year 1, especially with bulky Windows updates which basically make Windows more horrible and slow every month." I’ve been through this nightmare. 5400rpm, no thanks.

Also… why wouldn’t you want your hard-drive to have faster Read/Writes (which ultimately depends on RPM)?

You need to talk to LilAdmin then.

A NAS is meant to serve files to multiple simultaneous users and possibly for long sustained periods while a desktop/laptop hard drive reads-writes data for one user (primarily) and often for brief periods. Their usages are vastly different.

You need a lower powered, less heat-generating, lower RPM hard drive that can survive the more demanding requirement of a NAS server than what you need on a regular computer.

But of course, as someone said already, you need to talk to LinAdmin
