Problems:
The drive does not appear in the Finder (OSX 10.9.2).
The power button on the drive has no effect.
When power is applied, i.e., by inserting the power connector into the drive receptacle, the activity light flashes for an instant, the drive spins up, and the drive heads can be heard working, clackety-clack, in a seemingly normal way. They never stop, the power button does not shut off the drive, and the drive never appears in the Finder.
Different power supplies produce same result.
Advice? Can the data be saved?
Check if the drive appears on Disk Utility and see if possible to run First Aid.

I shut down everything overnight, and this morning the disk was accessible again. I ran First Aid, then shut it down to await a replacement drive, to which the contents will be transferred.
Meanwhile, a second My Book (2TB) has become unwritable and awaits transfer of its files to the new device.
Two at once makes it seem that something besides the drives is involved, eh?
