WD MC attached USB storage - safepoints - storage format?

One can plug in a USB device in the USB port of a My Cloud device.
This can attached device can be used for storing Safepoints.

QUESTION: will the contents stored on that attached USB device be represented
(1) in some proprietary WD format;
or
(2) in a standard/open format for computers.

WHY this question? Well, …

For case (1), if the Safepoints are “WD-internal concerns”, then WD would not bother to make the contents of the attached USB device usable by non-WD technology. So tis could imply that if the USB is later plugged into a USB port on a computer, then its contents might not be what you expected (e.g. unreadable, encrypted, …)

For case (2), if Safepoints are for all practical purposes stored in a standard neutral format, then a Safepoint can be used as a portable backup.

What I would like is a way to create a “portable” backup of the contents of a My Cloud device.

SO: can such backups be created via Safepoints to attached USB devices?

Safepoint backups are basically just a copy of the user data from the My Cloud to the backup location. One can access the files in that backup if their My Cloud ever crashes or if one needs to restore a user file that was accidently deleted on the My Cloud (prior to the next Safepoint backup). The backed up files are not encrypted or in a propriety format.

Give it a try and see for yourself.

OK, maybe this will serve my needs.
Will try it out.
