Wd essentials "not initialised"

Hi - a 1TB essentials has dies on me - flashing light. I have removed the (SATA) drive and attached it directly to the a motherboard (SATA).  Comes up as “not initialised” in windows (8) disk management.

What do I do?  Do I attempt file recovery before or aftter initialisation and what is recommended to do the recovery? Thanks.
