WD Elements 2TB external HD

When connect the drive it’s fine. Files copy back and forth and so on. After a few minutes however it starts having problems. File transfers fail, videos play sluggishly and eventually stop playing at all. It gets progressively worse. The same thing happens when I connect to other Windows computers. I tried a linux live distribution and had similar problems. The result of a Data Lifeguard Diagnostic quick test was: Quick Test on drive 2 did not complete! Status code = 4 (Unknown failed test element), Failure Checkpoint = 96 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 2! Please tell me there is something I can do.

Dude, that drive is bad. As simple as that.

Replace it.
