WD BLACK D50 2TB NVMe SSD Game Dock, Hot?

Hi all, I’m Bob

Thank you for being here.

Am I having heat issues? Is this too hot?

MY WD BLACK D50 2TB NVMe SSD Game Dock is 17months in use, recently it’s really started to spin up its fan, sounds like a rocket ship!

The device, monitored for the last day or so and has reached 83degC high, and I’ve seen it steady at 81degC.

I’m concerned the device is getting too hot, not sure if I should be dismantling and cleaning it? Does it have heat paste and heat sinks?

Thank you again community, advice appreciated.

Bob

I’ve run the device idle for the last hour or two and it’s @ 71degC.

I’m going to ‘Create a New Support Incident’ to get an official response and reference this thread - will update with details .

I think the room temp is around 19degC.

Thank you! Yes I have, I’ll update here with results.

Presently my next step is to

Download, Install, Test Drive and Update Firmware Using Western Digital Dashboard

Then report that back :innocent:

Were you ever able to get your fan working?

I have a new one of these, connected to my MacBook Air. WD does not provide Dashboard software for the Mac, so I have no means of using it to look up/control any features.

The thing sits on my desk, everything it working fine, but like others I’ve -never- heard the fan come on and it feels like the thing is way too hot.

Is this a design flaw?

Hi MRyanNYC, looks like you can get WD Drive Utilities for Mac though

I’m sorry to hear your fan doesnt come on, mine does come on and sounds like its now failing, a pulsating whiring, thats new.

I was able to monitor the temperatures as shown in my previous posts. You might want to do the same? I use CPUID HWMonitor for this, there are many options.

I’ve just downloaded the WD Drive Utilities to run diagnostics and update my support ticket due to the new failing fan sound.

gl @MRyanNYC!

Sorry looks like the windows version of WD Drive Utilities doesnt support the WD black :person_facepalming:

At least doesnt detect the drives, and now I have Dashboard that does.

@bobjames - I appreciate your response. Was excited for a moment, but you’re correct…the Mac version of WD Drive Utilities does not support the D50 Game Dock, and there’s no version of the Dashboard software for the Mac.

@WD_Admin - Why is that?

i’m not sure but if they are using MAUI to dev the windows app, it might be portable to OSX

developing multiple apps at the same time isnt so easy, i find it easier to get them done one at a time, lessons learned in main dev then transfer to other platforms, however MAUI promises one code base for all the platforms
