WD 40G HDD Acronis clone to WD 250G HDD problem

I have made a clone of my WD 40 gig hdd to a new WD 250 gig hdd. Works fine, booted from it, using it now. I’m having a problem adding my backup drive back into the system though. Originally I had the WD 40 gig (C:/) (hdd 0) and a Seagate 500 gig (D:/) (hdd 1) running perfectly in this system. Now when I hook the 500 gig back into the system my computer won’t boot at all. Jumpers all set as before, even tried different configurations of jumpers, but no luck. I get an error when starting up, only choices are “F1 to continue or DEL to enter setup”. DEL takes me to bios, bios see’s both drives though. F1 ends in error “cannot find NTLDR, press ctrl + alt + del to restart”

If I put the 40 gig in as a slave (hdd 1), with the 250 as master (hdd 0), the computer starts, see’s both drives, I can access both drives, everything fine.
Original 40 gig (hdd 0) and 500 gig as slave (hdd 1) boots.
New 250 gig (hdd 0) and 40 gig as slave (hdd 1) boots.
New 250 gig by itself (hdd 0) boots.
Old 40 gig by itself (hdd 0) boots.

It just will not work with the 250 gig as master (hdd 0) and the 500 gig as slave (hdd 1).
I found out it will boot if I put the 250 gig as master (hdd 0) and 500 gig as secondary ide master (hdd 3).

Any idea whats going on here?
