WD 1TB Passport, recognized but no access

Hello WD community, 

I’ve purchased my WD 1TB passport 1 year ago, and I’ve backed up several computers on it, but I’m having trouble getting access to the files.

Problem: When I plug in my WD passport it gets recognized after quite some time, but everytime I try to open the drive my computer starts lagging/freezes. I also get an error that I need to format the drive before using it; I was wondering is there a possible solution, without having to format the drive? 

I tried other external hard drives and they all work fine, just as a note.

Edit: Under “My Computer,” the drive shows up after a while, but the capacity doesn’t show under the icon(using windows 7).

Looks like the partition is corrupted.

You could try getting a data recovery to retrieve the files from drive.

This should be done as soon as possible since the partition could get worst.

It sounds like it is corrupt. Recuva http://www.piriform.com/recuva is a free data recovery program. EaseUS and other compainies have try and by policies whre you can test and recover a small amount and then buy. something like TestDisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk might fix the problem. Sometimes booting from a Linux Live CD allows access to data also.
