I can see the pictures on my laptop wirelessly through WDTV Live Media Player, should it also be possible for me to stream video… even iPlayer?

There’s no in-built functionality on the WDTV Live for watching BBC iPlayer.
Using additional software on your laptop, like TVersity Pro (or PlayOn?), you should be able to set up a media server and gain access to BBC iPlayer (assuming you live in the UK). It costs around $40.
There’s also an existing topic in the Ideas Lab you can vote on, asking for native support on the WDTV Live:

iPlayer support is apparently already In-Review (may or may not happen) but another vote won’t hurt. ;)
