Using MBL and Apple Time machine

I’ve recently purchased an iMac running OS El Captain. I’d like to use the MBL together with Time Machine to back it up on a regular basis.

But, I cannot get this to work at all and am falling at the first hurdle. When I get to the initial setup page of Time Machine on the iMac it ask me to select the backup drive the MBL is not available as an option. I have checked that the MBL has the latest software.

If I select the IP address of the MBL on the ‘Finder’, ‘connect to server’, it does see the MBL and shows me the file structure etc.

I can’t see what I’m doing wrong, but I obviously am.

Can anyone let me have a line by line simple set of instructions to get this set up and working.

Hi, welcome to the community.

  • Make sure that the firmware is up to date on the My Book Live.
  • Map the drive using AFP as per this knowledge base jus make sure that in step 2 change SMB for AFP.

Try to backup your computer.
