Im thinking of replacing my laptop HDD with this 500gb one, but i read that the usb controller is solded on to the hard rive. My question: is the USB controller solded onto the hard drive or can i open the case and use the HDD as an internal drive. I would be really happy if someone could tell me.

If the drive was manufacture in 2009 the board is attach to the drive itself.

Either of the following programs should be able to identify the model number of the drive within the enclosure.

AIUI, the final āVā in a model number such as WD5000BMVV indicates that the USB interface is integrated onto the drive.
