USB 3.0 to SATA/IDE adapter?

I have multiple WD internal hard drives from old computers. I am trying to use a USB 3.0 to SATA/IDE adapter for data recovery. I plug in a hard drive, and plug in the USB cable to my Windows 10 desktop. When I turn the adapter on, then the file explorer in Windows 10 stops responding? How can I get the data from my old IDE hard drives?

try one of the desktop card reader and hard disks bay which have been around for a while. they are good for copying data from old disks and some models even support EIDE
