Unable to attach Touro 4Tb USB 3.0 drive to EX4?

I sort of naively assumed that i could plug any external hard drive into the EX4, but it tells me my 4TB TOURO  is an unsupported device. Is there any way around this? I’m currently transferring 2.3TB across a network connection via a laptop with a 100Mbit nic. It’s painful watching the data creep by at 8-10mbps. I’d much rather use that USB 3.0 connection

The manual shows the formats supported for USB drives and gives information on how to perform a backup to the external unit.
