Super Slow - and Can't Search for Files

Hello,

I’ve read a number of related threads but haven’t found a workable solution.
I have My Book Live connected directly to my computer with the Ethernet cable. While it shows as a “Shared” it isn’t showing up as a “Device" in my finder window (MacBook Pro - Sierra 10.12.6) I think this is the reason I can’t use disk utilities –
I’d like to reformat the drive. Trying to search for files on the MBL drive has been IMPOSSIBLY slow and I’m guessing if I reformat it might solve the issue. I’ve tried the reset button but nothing has changed.
So — how do I reformat the MBL? and would that likely solve the issues?

Thanks for any replies.

Jack

Reformat won’t do anything. Even though you have it attached directly to your Mac via a cable, the MBL is still a NAS, and will always behave like one.

But to answer your question, if you do a system restore via the GUI, it’ll reformat the drive as part of the process.

Thanks for the reply, Tony.

How can I use a GUI if the drive isn’t being recognized? I downloaded WD_Utilities_Installer_for_Mac_2_1_1_64 , but the MBL did not show up in the application.

Jack

That’s because the WD Drive Utilities is not for use on NASes.

The user manual has the instructions you need. Have you read it?

Yeah - like three years ago. Still have the box but but can’t find the manual. I’ll check for it online.

Thanks,

Jack
