Is the rated storage space you choose when you order one of these, based on RAID 0 or RAID 1? In other words, if I want a total of 4 TB of RAID 1 storage, do I need to order the 8 TB version (with that rated storage being two 4 TB drives in RAID 0 configuration?). I’m thinking that is probably correct.

The storage amount indicated is based on ZERO redundancy. So RAID0 or JBOD arrangement.
If you want 4TB RAID1, you are correct. You’ll need the 8TB version.
