Strange Metallic Sound from WD1003FZEX

I received my new WD1003FZEX 1TB drive from Amazon a few days ago and while the SMART data checks out, I have noticed a strange noise. It seems to happen a few minutes after boot / a few minutes after using the drive. I hear no other clicking or grinding at all. Read and writes speeds are 187MB/s and temp stays around 33-36c.

I uploaded a clip of the sound to YouTube but the volume is a bit low. At the 5 second mark you will hear a mouse click followed right after by the strange metallic sound. The only way to describe it is that it sounds like a tiny hammer clinking inside the drive. Not very loud, but not something I’ve ever heard.

Hi there

When this happens does the drive fail at all? Try to run an extended test to see when results it gets.

Try running the test with Datalifeguard diagnostics:

So far the drive is running fine. I ran the extended test which took appx. two hours and here are the results:
