SSH access from OSX

I know that SSH is an unsupported feature, so this is for you non-WD-support-staff gurus:

I turned SSH on in Settings/Network and cofigured, setting a password. When I bring up an OSX terminal and type

ssh [ipaddress] -l admin

or 

ssh [ipaddress] -l root

It asks for admin@[ipaddress] or root@[ipaddress]'s password, which I entered as what I put when I configured SSH, and then it denies access.

I tried rebooting, no luck. What am I missing?

Note the login username carefully by hovering the mouse over the info icon (i in a circle) next to the SSH setting of the dashboard. I am not mentioing it explicitly here to avoid publicizing it for other random folks.
