I’m a prospective buyer of a MBL.

Plan to run it (or competitor) in Raid 1 mode to max protection.

There are four windows PCs on my home network, three are Win7 one win8.

Can I set up each user with their own back up space that other users cannot access?

Also can my college student shortly back up their work product to the MBL from their dorm room? Or is it just an access existing files remotely system.

Yes you can. Create a user and associates share. Remember that the “Public” share anyone can read and write to. If necessary there is a tweak that can make the “Public” share/folder read-only.
