Do I have to install the software provided by wd on each computer that I’d like to set back ups to/on? Or is there some way to perform the back ups over the network after installing the software on one desktop?

WD SmartWare must be installed on each individual system for the automatic backup engine to run. This applies even to WD NAS devices.
