Same video shopwing different format on wdtv and hub

I have both a WDTV SMP and a WDTV Live hub and there is something i need to find an answer for. If i highlight a video in preview mode on both machines it will show AVI as the format on the WDTV Hub and start playing in preview mode. On the otherit shows it as a  H264 video codec on the WDTV SMP but wont play the video in preview or full screen. Why is the same video given 2 different formats? Interestingly if i right click the file and look at ‘media info’ it says it is a mpeg file??? am i missing something.
