Hello All. First post here. I looked through the message boards and found a ton of useful information. Thank you!
Ive been having issues with my nightly backups. I checked through logs and removed all files containing special characters but I am still having issue. I have a 3TB 1xHDD NAS with a 4TB 1xHDD connected via USB. I am trying to backup from the NAS to the USB connected HDD.
I ended up removing my old backup and tried creating a new one.
I am receiving the error “Failed to create the safe-point root folder” under /var/log/wdnas.log
When I try different safe point names, I get the same error. When I try the same name as my previous safe point name (now deleted), it throws the error “Safe-point already exists”
Even though the safe point has been deleted in the WD UI, the files still exist under /_WDPROT/WDSAFE
Any help is much appreciated. For instance, can the WDSAFE folder be safely deleted then a new backup can be attempted? Not sure how sensitive the backup software is.
Yes, try deleting the entire WDSAFE folder then setup a new backup to teh USB drive and see if the error persists. Also it helps to ensure there are no problems with the USB drive by checking it for any errors using Windows or Mac OS.
Please note that the My Cloud Home line of devices are completely different than the My Cloud line of devices. Safepoint feature is (if I remember right) only found on the first generation v4.x firmware single bay/single drive My Cloud devices and possibly the My Book Live device(s).
For the My Cloud Home there is a specific subforum for that device.
Long story short, my Single bay 3TB My Cloud drive failed while a backup was in progress and took out the target, a 4TB USB connected WD disk.
Since then, I’ve reformatted the 4TB backup disk and the 3TB My Cloud drive has been recovered to a RAID array and is now sitting bare bones on my bookshelf. Lol, easy to say it’s been a rough week. Not saying the RAID (R10 4 disk) is the end all be all but its definitely a step in the right direction. May start using my oneDrive as well. Raid is also backed up to the newly reformatted 4TB USB WD drive.
