QNAP says drive is bad - Data Lifeguard Diagnostic does not

I have a QNAP NAS populated with 6 WD4000F9YZ-09N20L0 (4TB WD SE drives).

Two of the drives are being flagged by QNAP as having a smart errors.

Specific note:
ID 197: Current Pending Sector
ID 198: Uncorrectable Sector Count

So I pulled then and use the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows to check the drives out. This utility merrily says the drives are fine?

What the heck? Are the drives bad or good?

I lean towards trusting the QNAP flagging an issue, but it would still be nice to know what is happening.

Any ideas what I should think about this?

Whether the drive is “Good” or “Bad” is not a binary condition. The SMART values should be the same regardless of whether it’s QNAP or WDLG reading them, but the “conclusion” is different because it’s subjective.

I’d err on the safe side and see if WD will RMA the drive (assuming they’re still under warranty) given the values you’re seeing.
