PR4100 Internal Expanding without Deleting?

Hello, I’m currently looking at picking up a pr4100 with 8tb and then expanding it over time as needed to the 32tb capacity and my goal is a single volume like spanning, is it possible to use a spanning setup without formatting for every new drive.

thanks

Unfortunately, there’s no official documentation related to your unit’s RAID migration behavior available in WD’s site at the time of this post. I’d recommend sending an E-mail to WD Support for confirmation in the following link:

Try to provide as many details as possible related to what you are trying to accomplish. They may request additional information if needed.

Hello,

I do not think that what you need can be done on spanning volume without backing up and reformat. The data is wrtitten sequentially - when first disk fills up, system moves to second one and so on. That means you have no control over what is written where, and as there is no redundancy, you cannot replace disks one by one and then rebuild volume after each replacement as it would be with raid 5 for example.

You may want to take look at below thread - not completely related as it deals with disks expansion on RAID 5, but it might give you some ideas.
