PC freezes when backing up/transferring files

Hi,

Just got an Essentials External HD 1TB and when trying to backup or just copy to or from it the PC just freeezes. It usually start to copy and then when it reach to a certain point it just freezes, no error messages or anything. I have to hard boot every time. Also this happens whether I’m using SmartWare or not. It seems that the computer ‘chokes’ when it reaches certain point.

I though that this was a USB issue but my laptop is fairly new and has 2.0 throughout. I’m running Vista 64 and have 4GB of memory. The CPU is an AMD Turion.

 I own another external HD (Iomega) but don’t have this issue at all.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Odautu  –  Similarly observed running MS Win7 on a USB2 port.  File starts to transfer, but bogs down, and so does the rest of the system.
