Old WD My Book - too old?

I have an old WD My Book external hard drive (WD3200D032-000).
The hard drive icon isn’t showing up on the desktop (2019 MacBook Pro, Big Sur OS 11.6.8)
I’m using the old square USB 2.0 port on the drive and using an adapter to convert from the flat USB to the Mac USB-C.
The drive powers up and both ring lights both glow steadily on the front - but the Disk Utility does not show anything has mounted.
Is it just too old for my Mac to read?
I found an old download to a WD Button Manager but looks like the Mac says it’s too old to add to the Mac.
Any advice??
