Need help! Unable to save, xfer, delete files from my wd passport ultra

Hi,

I bought a new My Passport Ultra 3TB and transfered my files from my old Dell computer… Then I was able to use it with my husbands Dell Laptop… I had bought a MacBook Air, and I noticed that it is locked. I am now unable to save, transfer or delete files… What is going on? Can anyone help me? I am not a techie person, I thought this is just a plug and play kind of thing…

Maybe I should try another laptop.

By locked do you mean it’s asking for a password? If so, did you put a password on the drive? Are you still able to access the files on the original computer or the other dell?

If by locked you just mean that the files can’t be saved etc. as you described, than most likely the drive is formatted NTFS which means you can read files on a mac but not write to it. If this is the case, you will need to back up the data somewhere else temporarily and reformat the drive to a format that both Windows and Macs can read. I’ll put instructions below on how to do this. After formatting you can copy the files back to the drive.
