My wdg1cn5000n from 2008 worked well going from a PC to a Mac, but suddenly quit working this week

I have been using my 2008 MyBook on my Mac for about 16 months, intermittently, without a hint of problems, and suddenly when I connect (using either a 3 foot usb cable or a 3 foot firewire) I get “would you like to format this blank disk?” messages. 

I can see the disk icon in the disk utility window but there is no recover option, only a “format” option. 

I am using OS 10.6.7 on an iMac.

Sounds like something is corrupt. I don’t know much about Macs but maybe TestDisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk will help.
