My Passport not mounting on macos 10.12

I have a My Passport which hasn’t been used for a long while. Connected it to various machines running 10.11 or 10.12. Drive doesn’t mount, although it spins, and does not appear in Disk Utilities.

Connected to multiple USB ports on
MB Pro running 10.12
MB Air running 10.11
iMac running 10.12

On iMac, under System Profile
→ USB, it shows the My Passport 07A8
→ SATA/SATA Express, only internal drive shows

Hello,

Are you able to test the unit with a different USB cable?

Tried it with a brand new USB cable. Still not mounting.

Chime in to the issue here.

I also have a “My Passport Ultra” (P/N: WDBMWV0020BBK-05) which was formatted as a HFS+ on the 1st day it was bought to be used mainly as a Time Machine Device and other backups.

Was working 100% until the upgrade from 10.11.5 to 10.12.4 - which it worked fine for one TM backup and then the mac stopped recognizing it and auto mounting it.
If trying to open Disk Utility while the drive is plugged in - it will continue to spin indefinitely until I pull the drive out.

Tried running WD Drive Utilities on:

  • Windows: no errors
  • Mac: quick test never completes

Was able to mount it on windows using HFS Explorer without any issues and copy some files out.

It seems there’s some incompatibility between latest Mac OS and this drive firmware.

Adding some more info on the matter, here’s a printout from Terminal:

/dev/disk3 (external, physical):
   #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
   0: FDisk_partition_scheme *2.0 TB disk3
   1: Apple_HFS WD2TB TimeMachine 2.0 TB disk3s1

Which clearly shows it’s been recognized by the OS - just fails to mount for some reason:

Another update.

Using a windows machine updated the firmware on my drive from 1.012 to 1.022

No difference.

Continual loop running fsck.

WD Support told me this is not covered under warranty as it’s a Mac OS issue (no issue on windows).

Did you try to reset the SMC of the mac?
