My Passport Mac - new external drive - how long is too long?

Received my Passport for Mac. Set it up with Time Machine and it’s been “stuck” on “backing up ZERO KB of 601. GB” since last night. The light is on consistently and the drive is buzzing. Is it just that there are so many files to back up? Anything I should troubleshoot? Thanks for any suggestions.
