My Cloud newbie

Recieved brand new MC (3 TB) yesterday,  So far I’m extremely pleased with my progress without problems:

  • Registered hardware
  • Confirmed Router UPnP was disabled
  • Updated Windows
  • Waited until it acclimated to room temp.
  • Hooked up MC (gig e network)
  • Confirmed MC ip and accessed via ip
  • Updated firmware
  • Rebooted MC
  • Confirmed that port forwarding was enabled and UPnP was still disabled
  • By passed MC install
  • Installed smartware pro and backedup windows internal SSD and external drive
  • Connected windows laptop
  • Connected Ubuntu laptop and managed shares via ip; added iPhone

A few tasks / questions remain:

  1. Enable streaming.
  2. Hook up Mac book pro and enable TimeMachine (should be straight forward)
  3. Populate a share using Ubuntu and a fire wire drive
  4. Hook up brand new My Book Studio (4 TB) and enable safepoints
  5. Enable my wife’s iPhone
  6. Enable web access for non-colocated relatives. Can this be accomplished?
  7. How was my router access to enable port forwarding without my knowledge?
  8. Since I didn’t register during setup is WD authentication being used?
  9. What function does quick view enable?

Regards,

Pete

You can add the non-colocated users and them give them remote access rights.  When you add them, include their email addresses.  WD will send them an email asking them to register with WD.  Once they register they can access the MC through the WD My Cloud desktop program, WD My Cloud mobile app, or online at wd2go.com.

Thanks for the reply.

I’m hoping to find an affordable, easy to deploy mehtod bypass to WD authentication for cloud access. I fully embrace  Steve Gibson’s TNO mantra (trust no one); see my post here.

I have a concern about WD global infosec policies and procedures. While I’m confident they have excellent internal deportment I have serious reservations about their prescence in the global market place.

Pete
