My Cloud Gen 2 has outdated, insecure ssh

I purchased this unit expecting that it could be used as secondary backup but I’ve been thwarted at my attempts. My main backup solution uses rsync over ssh. Using Dirvish, I retain 2 weeks of backup per machine. I was hoping to copy the latest backups to the unit over an ssh link. This way, if my primary backup fails, I can still recover from the secondary one.

The first issue is that openssh is version 4.0p1. This version’s collection of ciphers have been removed by openssh 7.x because they are no longer considered secure. This means that updated servers will not connect to it because it doesn’t offer any secure cipher.

I tried using nfs but “cp -rp” fails to keep uid, gid, or permissions properly. Same for rsync. I tried creating matching users using Linux adduser, with matching uid and gids but that didn’t work, and a reboot removed these.

So, how does someone use this device a backup device? Is there an alternative firmware that will solve this problem?

Hello,

I have never tried this. Let’s see if an experienced user can comment on this.
