My Book suddenly become inaccessible (on two drives)

I recently returned a brand new My Book 8TB external drive (formatted for Mac) because the files on it were occasionally becoming inaccessible (although the disk would be spinning). It would also not eject, so the USB cable had to be reconnected to get it to work. Tried on other computers and new USB cable but same thing. WD Drive Utilities’ Complete Drive Test stops at 10% (passes SMART and Quick Test). I was given a replacement drive (same model) and it worked fine for a few weeks but then it started to malfunction in exactly the same way. After two defective products I’m starting to think that others may have had this issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
