My Book Essential 1TB.....SLOW!

Ok, so i just hooked up the WD My Book Essential to my PC ( XP Prof ) and i am backing up my files as per the program.  However, is it supposed to take almost an hour to back up 6 gigs worth of information?  I can not beleive its this slow.

I have read some post about drag and drop of files…can i literally just right click copy my C drive and paste it to the G drive ( my book ) instead of using the smartware?  Basically like using a giant thumb drive?

My other question is, can I also use this external HD to back up both mine and my wifes laptop?  Will it create seperate space for both machines?

Nobody from WD can answer this?

Maybe you should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this. You can do so either by phone or email.

The Smartware is total ■■■■. I deleted it and use Acronis True image. They have a stripped down version here

http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=en It doesn’t have all of the features of the paid version.

Your data transfer rate works out to 1.67 MB/s. That’s USB 1.1 speed, not USB 2.0.

Are you sure your machine has USB 2.0 ports?

If you are connecting via the front USB ports, try the rear USB ports instead. Sometimes the internal cabling is not the best.
