My Book Essential 1TB detection problem

Hello,

My My Book Essential 1TB drive has weird detection problem.

I’ve connect it to TV LG42LW4500

And it works, but the 1st time.

If i:

* turn off the TV, then turn on TV

* disconnect and reconnect the drive via USB connection

* turn it off via power button 

In all those case drive no longer can be recognised by TV

The only way to be recognised by TV is to disconnect ac charger from surge protector,

then to wait 15sec and put back the ac charger back to the protector.

So this mean if i want to use it, i need to disconnect any time the ac charger for 15 seconds from surge protector,

else the drive will be not recognised… Which is very weird…

I’ve tried 2 different surge protectors and problem persist.

What cause this issue and how to fix it?

I’ve noted that that my firmware is initial release 1.003,

is it firmware problem? Can it be fixed with drive firmware update?

but i’m unable to update my firmware due some unknown issue[think cause by WD itself] as described here:

What i should do and how to solve it?

Might be a compatibility problem with the TV, have you tried connecting another hard drive to see if the same problem keeps happening or do you have any similar problem on the PC?

After more testing i noticed that issue only exist when HDD is powered down,

and at next boot if the USB cable is attached to TV, is unable to be detected.

In short the HDD can be detected when:

1 Need to disconnect USB cable from TV 1st. [After this the HDD will turn off itself]

2 Need to power up the HDD via his powerbutton and to wait few[5-6] seconds until spinup and constant light appear

3 Then to attach the USB cable to TV 

After this the HDD will be detected fine.

If the HDD go into auto power down mode[sleep], resume the HDD from sleep is also no problem with detection.

But if i turn off the TV, the HDD is also auto turn off along with TV.

Then if i turn on the TV, the HDD will also auto turn on along with TV,

but no longer can’t be detected. [TV will popup USB device error]

Need to repeat steps, 1,2,3 to be detected fine.

So this issue only exist on full HDD power down cycle [sleep is a not problem]

Looks like the TV don’t wait enough for device to spinup,

so the HDD need to be already turned on and after this to attached it to TV.

Dunno if this can be fixed with HDD firmware. 

I see in release notes, they are many fixes and i would to update it [if i can !]

Else my TV firmware is already up to date.

Yes, i have connected 8GB USB flash drive to TV and there is no such problems.

On PC i don’t have such troubles with My book drive.

Looks like this issue is between LG TV and My book drive,

and there is no malfunction in either of them.

But probably a bug in firmware.
