My Book 5000 not recognized

Windows XP pro/WD5000. Never a problem until 2 months ago. Sometime during the night (usually) MyBook isn’t recognized and unable to backup from C drive. If I reboot the computer sometimes it will find it again, but usually I have to un-plug it. Things done so far

  1. Upgraded USB ports to hi-speed

  2. Checked device driver updates (current)

According to Events Mgr I’m getting a warning sometime around 5 AM that it fails to find the WD after paging it.

Is the unit fried? Should I replace?

Did you receive a reply?  I have the same problem.

Does the drive pass an Extended Test as well as the S.M.A.R.T status using WD’s diagnostics?  If not, what happens if you test it on a different PC?
