So after an firmware upgrade in the Web Config, it just sits there and I cant access anything from it anymore.

Yes, Ive read the same stories on here, but I have a question that wasnt asked by people in the same situation. 

Rather than be ignored by support and somehow blamed for the problem, can I just smash it open and take the drive out? Will the drive just boot from being put into a PC?

Yes you can, you’ll just void the warranty. The file system of the drive is EXT3, so unless you run Linux or you install Ext2 Installable File System For Windows (It also opens EXT3) or a similar software then you won’t see the drive at all on your computer.
