When the disk wakes up it really takes a while. For example, if the disk is asleep after a period of inactivity and then you navigate to it and click on Create New Folder it can take up to 15-20 seconds to wake up and present the interface to create a new folder. Once it is woken up everything works relatively quickly.

Same goes for folder navigation. The first time you are trying to expand a folder after a wake-up it takes 10-20 to display the subfolder structure. After that - once it is awake, things work pretty quickly.
It doesn’t seem normal. For example, my smaller external 4TB USB (WD Passport) does the same thing but it takes about 5 seconds for it to wake up and present 'create new folder prompt.
