Is it possible for daily backups to only back up changed/new files?

I used to use a different brand external drive, but it is old and needs to be replaced. Unfortunately the newer software for the brand I used to use doesn’t back up the way the older version did. I would do a daily back up at the end of the day, and it would only back up new/changed files. So it went really quick!

Since their program doesn’t do that anymore, I am looking at other brands. Does the software for WD external drives allow this option? Or will it back up all files everytime, even if they haven’t changed?

I look forward to any answers!

Hi,

This is really a sales question, but I’ll try to help

WD Backup allows selection of files or folders to be backed up and also to set days/times to back up. Since it runs in the background you do NOT have to wait while it backs up so long as the computer is running. It also keeps track of each backup date & time. I believe, but am not certain, that it only backs up changes in the files except for the initial backup…

If you backup all or most of your working drive the first time it does a backup it can take a long time; maybe overnight. You may also find that the backup usually takes almost twice as much space on the backup drive as there is on the working drive.

Hi, Thank you very much for your response.
I have done a little more research, and I also sent an email to customer support.

It seems that the Smartware software works the way I would expect it to work. (I am looking at the 1TB WD Elements USB 3.0 high-capacity portable hard drive for Windows.

On both websites that I’m looking at to order it, it says “Free Trial of Smarware Pro” included. I’m NOT looking to pay for a program too.

  1. Is that just a “PRO” version, but there is a “regular” version that is free?
  2. If there is a free, “non pro” version, does that also do what I want it to do? (Only back up new/changed files)

I have also asked customer support this additional question, but thought I might get a quicker response here.

Thanks for any assistance!

Sorry, I cannot help you on this.
