If you’re using the most recent version of WD Drive utilities, it’s most probable that the software is no longer compatible with Windows XP, since XP is end-of-life.  I am looking into this just to double check, though.

In the WD Drive Utilities help file, it shows that the drive utility is only supported on Windows Vista and later.  So, the software is definitely not compatible with, nor supported on, Windows XP.  Sorry…

Would you kindly be able to point to the latest version of this software that still supported XP?

I just purchased 3 WDBMWV0020BBK-05 Passport Ultra 2TB Hard Drives.
I am having trouble getting them to work on Windows XP.
I had purchased 2 prior to this and have had no problem with them.
Why are the first 2 drives compatible and the next 3 not.
I plan to continue to use XP I suggest that WD reconsiders.
Why was there NO mention of the fact that you are not supporting XP
mentioned in the advertising?? I am a computer tech for around 30 years,
back in the DOS era with an IBM XT.

WD hard drives manufactured after 2015 no longer mention support for Windows XP since Microsoft themselves officially dropped support for the platform on April 8, 2014. Consequentially, app updates were optimized considering operating systems supported by Microsoft in order to optimize performance and features.

The hard drive itself on the other hand works with Windows XP as long as it is properly formatted.

Try installing the original version of the app that came with your hard drive. The latest version is unlikely to work properly in your system since it was not designed for Windows XP.

I have tried using Windows XP Administrative Tools>Disk Management. I can not format the drive after creating a partition. I tried using WD Quick Format as well as a partition and formatting software. I have several 1TB and two 2TB “WD My Passport Ultra” drives that are about one year old. They work flawlessly. The THREE new 2TB drives are not recognized in “MY Computer”. I tried the software included with the first drives that work on XP. Still no good. The THREE new drives work on windows 7 with no problem.
Thanks

The new hard drives are using GPT, which is not supported by Windows XP (MBR is becoming legacy).

Write zeros to the hard drive to completely destroy the partition table and initialize the hard drive from scratch as MBR.
