Installing My Book,I didn't take off the security pword for firmware upd. suddenly unreadable

I copied the WD Smartware first thing,from experience to my laptop and to a DVD. Installed the My Book software and the security password.I read about the firmware and Utility update needed and didn’t take off my password before doing so. My Drive became unreadable on my Macbook. I reformatted the HD,took it to a windows xp (offline) desktop with the windows version of the firmware  and utilities updates needed on a flashdrive from my Macbook. I installed them with the unreadable drive attatched to my Windows machine and suddenly the HD was recognized! When the pop-up to turn off both drives and recycle, I took it to my Macbook and it was recognized there to do the firmware and Utility updates needed to finish the install. Problem solved!
