Is there some sort of ‘go back’ feature on the external drive that would allow me to retrieve data I accidentally deleted?

No you will need data recovery software Recuva http://www.piriform.com/recuva I saw this today http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ Several companies have free versions to try and allow limited recovery before buying.
