I turn off my hub but I can still transfer files from my laptop to my hub via my network.

Press and Hold the Red Power button on the Remote for 5 Seconds
to completely Shutdown the WDTV Live Hub (and it’s HDD)
Pressing the Red Power button for a _ second _ is putting it into ‘Standby’ mode ie. HDD still active
To completely Shutdown you need to press and HOLD the power button for about 5 seconds!
This will shutdown the HUB completely.
I suspect that you are just pressing the power button for a short time and this just puts the unit into standby.
