How to display foreign language characters in srt file?

how to display  foreign language characters with external subtitle srt file ?

It displayed fine on VCL but with WDLive it showed square box for

certain specific characters ?   Am I decode the srt wrong?

ex. : chắc chắn có người mà các hạ ko bao giờ muốn dính vào.

WDLive :  chc chn có ngi m cc h ko bao gi mun dnh vo.

Please advise how to rectify this problem. thanks

Did you change the additional language encoding?

settings > System> then use the drop down to change the additional language support

Also What language?

it’s Vietnamese and I tried them all , no luck.

I wonder if WD liveTV  do not support Unicode.

If they are not supported when the SRT is UTF-8 you gotta convert them with AVIAddXSubs to bitmaps.

you got it.  Hit the nail on the head.  Vietnamese is not supported

I completely forgot about that.  Yes you can convert to a bitmap and have them display because it will see it as a picture rather then characters.

I tried AVIAddXSubs, but some characters won’t be able to be bitmapped , specially the characters that have double accents

ie. srt file : " Số    người  chết      được     trên  2  triệu "

bitmap     : " S[?] ngư[?]i ch[?]t ]  [?]ư[?]c  trên  2  tri[?]u"

I had pm the AVIAddSubs author at Domm9 for this. we’ll see if the problem can be fixed.

Well done, in the meantime you might wanna try Subtitle Creator (load srt, save as vobsub) which also does this as I just remembered.

Thanks Techflaws, it is finally working with Subtitle Creator.  I’m so happy  even though I have to convert about 30 SRT files
